Pokemon Go Player’s Unown Nickname Thwarted by Inappropriate Text

An Unown enthusiast who was innocently categorizing their different forms of the Gen 2 creature in Pokemon Go has been forced to reconsider their approach to nicknaming.

The user turned to Reddit to express their frustration over the unexpected obstacle that would prevent their army of living letters from achieving uniformity.

The author of the thread expressed frustration as they attempted to rename the letter ‘U’ as Unown, but were unsuccessful. They clarified that they simply wanted to enclose the letter in parenthesis, as they had done for other characters.

They inquired, “How is this considered inappropriate?”and also stated, “Niantic should be more mindful.”

A number of users expressed their surprise and also verified that “Unown U functions without the use of parentheses for some unknown reason.”Some even proposed potential reasons for why the author’s naming method may have been restricted.

There are 28 different Unown forms but not all are available in Pokemon Go.

One player suggested that the design of Unown U resembled a male body part when viewed directly, making it inappropriate. However, it is not certain if this is the case, as various replies promptly shared screenshots of Unown U with different punctuation marks that were not considered inappropriate.

Other users expressed dissatisfaction with the profanity filter on Pokemon Go, stating that it was too sensitive. One person even shared that they were unable to use their desired nickname for their Oricorio due to its varying connotations in different languages.

On the other hand, some argued that the incident was simply “An old bug”and that “Some names randomly trigger this error message without any valid cause.”

No matter the situation, if you’re currently categorizing your Unown, it may be wise to avoid using parentheses for the near future.
