Niantic is making significant changes to Pokemon Go, as the popular mobile game is set to discontinue support for several older Android devices. This decision is part of a broader strategy to enhance gameplay and overall performance, enabling the game to leverage improved technology.
Over the years, fans have witnessed numerous visual updates within Pokemon Go, including notable changes to Avatars and dynamic overworld enhancements that reflect seasonal shifts. However, as the game’s technology evolves, it becomes necessary to phase out older devices that can no longer support these advancements.
In a recent announcement on the official Pokemon Go website, Niantic revealed a list of 32-bit Android devices that will soon lose compatibility with the game.
Impending Device Support Changes
The phase-out process will occur in stages, beginning in March. The initial wave will affect those who download the game via the Samsung Galaxy Store, followed by a broader implementation impacting users from the Google Play Store in June.
Devices Losing Support
The following devices will no longer support Pokemon Go:
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
- Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
- Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
- LG Fortune, Tribute
- OnePlus One
- HTC One (M8)
- ZTE Overture 3
- Certain Android devices released before 2015
Players currently using these devices will no longer be able to access Pokemon Go once the changes take effect. However, they can still log in to their account on a different compatible device to continue their adventures.
This development isn’t unprecedented, as Pokemon fans have recently faced similar hardware limitations, particularly with the demanding requirements of Pokemon TCG Pocket, which restricts access for older phone users or necessitates gameplay on PC via emulators like BlueStacks.
While this transition may seem challenging for some, it is unlikely to create lasting obstacles for the overall player base. Most smartphone users tend to upgrade their devices periodically, thus minimizing the long-term impact of this change. For those resistant to upgrading, the reality is that smartphone durability often necessitates a new purchase, ensuring that when they do make the switch, Pokemon Go will be ready and waiting for them.
