Although Pokemon Go is more enjoyable in urban and developed areas due to the abundance of Gyms to battle and Stops to spin, Trainer Tips, a YouTube content creator, may have the answer for those curious about the difficulty of playing the game in remote locations.
The Go player and video creator released a video entitled “I Played Pokemon GO’s Biggest Event on a Deserted Island”which accurately depicts their experience. During their exploration of a small Philippine island, Trainer Tips made the decision to visit during Pokemon Go Fest Global 2024, providing the opportunity to encounter rare Pokemon.
Trainer Tips (real name Nicholas Oyzon) traveled to Siargao in the video. Despite the video’s portrayal, the island is not completely deserted, but rather has a population of approximately 100,000 as of 2015 (according to Wikipedia). Therefore, it is not as lively as major cities such as London or New York.
Oyzon and his family, as they often do in their videos, ventured out to explore the small island. They were accompanied by their mother and sister as they explored the remote location. While there were some Poke Stops on the island, the options were limited and many of the stops were even missing images to depict their contents.
As mentioned later in the video, the signal and heat were major challenges, but the biggest obstacle was finding participants for the Necrozma Raids during the event. Fortunately, the game did function in the area, although it was not as densely populated as busier locations.
Despite briefly experiencing a poor signal, Oyzen’s phone eventually fixed itself after displaying a support message stating “This phone is not compatible with Pokemon Go.”
Oyzen was able to quickly reach the top of any available Showcases while exploring the island since there were no other players to populate them, making it one of the advantages of their journey.
Many other players of Pokemon Go, as well as followers of Trainer Tips, also expressed their thoughts and shared their personal experiences playing in various remote locations across the world in the comments section.
A comment was made stating, “Siargao is amazing! I had no idea they had gyms there.”Another person chimed in, “It seemed like a really enjoyable place to play the game. Even though the shiny haul may have been small, the island had a great energy.”
Another comment was made by a person who shared their personal experience in a remote area. They mentioned, “In Brazil, a large number of Poke Stops have been recently added with the standard Poke Stop image. All of these Poke Stops are local businesses.”
During the conversation, one person mentioned that they had also been to the same island before. They remarked, “What a coincidence, I’ve been there before. It was about three years ago, and I went specifically to play Pokemon Go.”
They further added that they had a period of time where they were able to dominate all of the Pokemon gyms for Mystic for almost a week, and they believe that one of their Pokemon may still be holding a gym on the island.
