Pokemon Go’s 8th Anniversary Party Event: Shiny Meltan, Party Hat Grimer, and More!

Niantic has revealed plans for an event to commemorate the eighth anniversary of Pokemon Go. This celebration will feature a rare Shiny Pokemon and numerous party hats.

Pokemon Go was launched on July 6, 2016, making its eighth anniversary just around the corner. In honor of this milestone, the game will host a special event called Pokemon Go’s 8th Anniversary Party, as part of the ongoing Shared Skies season.

The event’s local time frame will begin on Friday, June 28 at 10 am and end on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 8 pm.

The 8th Anniversary Party of Pokemon Go will showcase a diverse array of Pokemon, including several that are typically not obtainable.

Please take note that any Pokemon with an asterisk next to its name may potentially appear as a Shiny variant.

During this event, players who use the Mystery Box will have the opportunity to come across Shiny Meltan, a rare form of Meltan that can only be found during special events.

During the event, 1-star Raids will have an increased chance of featuring the following Pokemon as Shinies:

Event Bonuses

The bonuses listed below will be in effect for the duration of the 8th Anniversary Party:

  • There is an increased likelihood of becoming Lucky Friends.
  • The likelihood of receiving Lucky Pokémon in trades has been raised.
  • By opening Gifts, trading Pokémon, or participating in raids, Gyms, or Trainer Battles together, friendship levels will increase at a faster rate than usual!
  • There is a possibility of obtaining 8 or 88 Gimmighoul Coins, or even more, when spinning a PokéStop with a Golden Lure Module.

In addition to the wild encounters, there will also be a few extra bonuses that will be available on certain days.

From June 28 at 10 am to June 29 at 11:59 pm in the local time zone

  • During these days, placing Eggs in an Incubator will result in a 1/2 decrease in Egg Hatch Distance.

June 30 at midnight to July 1 at 11:59pm in the local time zone.

  • The catching of Pokémon will yield 2 times the amount of XP.

From July 2 at midnight to July 3 at 8 pm in the local time zone.

  • Players will receive 2 times the amount of Stardust when catching Pokémon.

Field & Timed Research

Players will have the chance to encounter Starter Pokemon through event-themed Field Research tasks.

Some specific tasks will grant Mega Energy for the listed Pokemon:

  • Venusaur
  • Charizard
  • Blastoise
  • Sceptile
  • Blaziken
  • Swampert

Furthermore, there will be Timed Research available that offers the following rewards:

  • XP
  • Stardust
  • Encounters with event-themed Pokémon
    • Raticate wearing a party hat
    • Nidorino wearing a party hat
    • Wobbuffet wearing a party hat
    • Meltan

In addition, a Timed Research will also be available for purchase during the event. By buying a ticket for $2 (or the equivalent in your local currency), players can access tasks that revolve around the number 8. Successful completion of these tasks will result in the following rewards:

  • 1 Incubator
  • 1 Super Incubator
  • 1 Premium Battle Pass
  • 1 Lucky Egg
  • 1 Rocket Radar
  • 1 Star Piece
  • 1 Incense
  • 1 Poffin
  • 88,888 XP

It is important to note that all Timed Research tasks must be finished and their rewards must be obtained by the end of the event on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 8 pm local time.

To commemorate the anniversary of Pokemon Go, Niantic has introduced the Whispers in the Woods Masterwork Research. By paying $5 (or the corresponding amount in local currency), players can access tasks to capture a Shiny Celebi and receive extra event perks.

Please note that if you have already completed the previous Shiny Celebi Special Research, Distracted by Something Shiny, you will not be able to purchase this.
