Pokemon Horizons: The Series has confused fans by giving Maushold, one of the most adorable creatures introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, a horrifying shrieking sound for its cry.
Typically, most Pokemon in the anime simply repeat their names, with a few exceptions, such as Meowth and Mewtwo, who can speak like humans. Additionally, certain Pokemon feature unusual cries; for example, Staryu and Starmie produce karate sounds as a reference to Ultraman.
The Maushold line made its debut in the Generation 9 games, appearing as families consisting of three or four Pokemon, all counted as a single unit. In the games, they emit a peculiar beeping noise for their cry, reminiscent of Morse code.
Fans had high hopes that the Pokemon Horizons anime would give the Maushold family a charming cry. Instead, the creators opted for a decidedly unsettling sound. A clip of this unexpected cry was shared by PokemonGems on Twitter/X, much to the chagrin of viewers.

One user remarked, “I remember when Pokemon just said their name, what is this?” Another added humorously, “I too sound like a raspy air leak when I’m talking to my family, so this seems pretty fitting to me!”
Interestingly, some fans actually appreciate the unique sound, with remarks like, “It’s a refreshing change after years of loud, high-pitched cries and ‘chu’s.”
It’s worth noting that this is the original sound for Maushold in the Pokemon Horizons anime’s Japanese version. In the English dub, they produce high-pitched yelling noises, which, while still somewhat annoying, are less menacing.
True to their real-life counterparts, mice do make hissing sounds and aren’t particularly vocal compared to dogs or cats. While this adds authenticity to their portrayal, it doesn’t always translate well to entertainment.
The Maushold line has garnered a negative reputation among fans, primarily due to the challenge of obtaining the family of three in Pokemon Go. Hopefully, players will come to appreciate the original representation of these Pokemon, provided they can tolerate the hissing sounds.
