The Pokédex draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, ranging from real-world animals to popular myths and legends. One could easily assume that at this point there is a Pokémon for every real animal, but that is far from the truth.
Pokémon players took to Reddit’s r/pokemon to debate which animals are long overdue to appear in the Pokédex, and a few surprising choices stood out as the most popular.

A surprising choice that quickly stood out was the hummingbird. Many people have suggested these little birds, with one person joking that there should be, “A three-stage evolution, and with each stage they get smaller”and another noting how funny it would be if a Pokémon of 5 cm can simply dominate the competition.
One commenter mentioned alpacas and llamas, making sure to clarify that they were not including Arceus in that. This started a debate about what type of creature the Pokémon God is supposed to be, with one confused reader asking, “Who counts Arceus as an alpaca?”»
Some fans in this thread even took the time to discuss theories for the next generation, with one bringing up ‘microscopic monsters’ and suggesting, “Maybe the next professor will have the genius idea of use a microscope and the next generation gimmick might be to become tiny.»
