Pokémon players are stunned by the price of a Nintendo DS game

A Pokémon fan spotted a boxed copy of a classic DS title being sold for a ridiculously high price at a retro store.

It’s common for video games to decrease in price over time, but that’s not the case for many mainline Pokémon games. Retro Pokémon games can often increase in price over time, depending on their condition.

Nintendo DS games are a curious example of this, since it is the second best-selling video game console of all time, yet Pokémon titles on this system command ridiculous prices online, especially Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver, which are often cited as the best entries in the series.

The fact that Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver used the Pokéwalker meant that boxed versions of the game with the accessory could drive the price even higher. However, even without the Pokéwalker, Gen 2 remakes can be very expensive to buy in the box.

Pokémon fan spots $1,400 SoulSilver game in the wild

A user on Reddit Gaming shared a photo they took of a copy of Pokémon SoulSilver spotted in a store. This copy of the game was priced at $1400 as it was still sealed, which is considerably more than similar copies on eBay, which sell for between $750-900.

“The prices for SS and HS are crazy. They are highly sought after, but there aren’t many in circulation, so the price is higher than necessary. I tried to find an SS to buy myself but quickly gave up,” lamented one user.

“If only THEY COULD. WEAR THIS. ON THE SWITCH. At least the original Gameboy version; their Switch Online subscription would explode,” one user pointed out, referring to the lack of support for older Pokémon games on the Switch.

“HG/SS have a lot of resale value, certainly not $1400 but they end up selling for more than most older Pokémon games. I’m not exactly sure why,” one user wrote, while another said, “The guy who ends up buying it for $800 will think he got a deal.”

The high price of Gen 2 remakes is due to a mix of factors. The games are beloved, so people don’t want to sell them, and they came with an accessory that is not only useful to have for gaming, but was never made available for future titles.

So Gen 2 remakes will continue to command premium prices for the foreseeable future, barring some sort of remake or remaster by The Pokémon Company.
