In a proactive effort to combat scalpers and enhance customer experience, Pokémon retailers are implementing strict measures ahead of the highly anticipated release of the Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Prismatic Evolutions, scheduled to launch on January 17, 2025.
Since its announcement in November 2024, this Special Set, centered around Eevee and its eight popular evolutions, has generated significant excitement among fans and collectors alike. However, concerns are mounting regarding potential stock shortages and a wave of pre-order cancellations. Retailers fear that scalpers may monopolize the initial supply to resell items at exorbitant prices.
Retailer Takes a Stand Against Scalping
MissingNo. Games, an independent Pokémon retailer located in Wisconsin, has been particularly vocal about its approach to maintaining fair sales conditions. In a recent communication shared within the Pokémon TCG community on Reddit, the store unveiled its plans to manage the release effectively.
The email disclosed that to prioritize the safety of both employees and customers, only two parties will be permitted inside the store at any given moment. Furthermore, each group will be limited to purchasing just one product from the Prismatic Evolutions set.
In a unique twist to discourage reselling, MissingNo. Games has stated that should customers wish to purchase at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP), the shrink wrap on their products will be removed, and the corners of booster packs will be cut. Conversely, for those desiring sealed products, the retail will charge market prices—effectively deterring potential resellers.
For context, the Elite Trainer Boxes for Prismatic Evolutions are recommended to retail at $49.99 USD. Despite this, eBay listings suggest that they’re being offered from $90 to an alarming $200 USD, with many completed sales exceeding $120 USD.
This situation is far from isolated; Pokémon TCG products have faced scalping issues throughout 2025. A noteworthy incident occurred on January 10, when members of the community united to report scalpers after Journey Together products quickly depleted their stock.
Reflecting the growing concerns, several independent retailers have chosen not to carry Prismatic Evolutions inventory to protect their staff and store environments. This trend highlights the ongoing challenges retail faces as the demand for collectible cards continues to surge.
