Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Fans Bring Iconic Jirachi Myth to Life

Nostalgic Pokemon fans have been relishing memories of a Ruby & Sapphire myth from decades ago.

The purported method for capturing Jirachi on the Game Boy Advance duo was often based on anecdotal evidence, resulting in widely varying steps. Many players reported success by interacting with a white rock outside the Mossdeep Space Station, which was believed to trigger an encounter with the Wish Pokemon.

Jirachi could only be obtained legitimately through a download from a bonus disc that was included with certain 2003 copies of Pokemon Colosseum.

Despite the widespread rumor, one Reddit user has created an animated sequence based on how they always imagined it to look in-game.

The idea has caused Gen 3 enthusiasts to exchange their personal stories about the myth.

According to one response, the common belief was that in order to find Jirachi and have the opportunity to battle it on the moon, one had to communicate with the space center every day for 100 days.

Another person reflected on a rumor they had read in a teen magazine, claiming that by saving 100 times and interacting with a rock, one could be transported to the moon and catch both Deoxys and Jirachi.

In 2014, Game Freak made a reference to these rumors with the release of Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, whether it was intentional or by chance.

In the post-game Delta Episode of the remakes, Trainers were able to encounter Deoxys in space while riding on the back of Rayquaza. They could then defeat and capture the Mythical ‘mon. However, Jirachi remained unobtainable without external means, such as limited-time code events.

Pokemon enthusiasts are well acquainted with exaggerated stories. During the 1990s, conversations on school playgrounds often revolved around players of the Red & Blue versions recounting tales of a supposed hidden Mew underneath a truck in Vermilion City. However, these stories were also proven to be untrue. Nevertheless, a fortunate handful were able to obtain the original Mythical Pokemon, a few of which have managed to survive even into the year 2024.
