The recent expansion of Pokémon TCG Pocket, titled Mythical Island, has introduced more than 80 new cards, offering players fresh opportunities to enhance their decks. However, a noticeable gap has emerged that is raising eyebrows among the community.
Notably, despite the expansion’s extensive offerings, it reported a complete absence of new Metal-type cards. Previously, in the Genetic Apex set, Metal-types already had limited representation, with only five existing cards: Mawile, Pawniard, Bisharp, Meltan, and Melmetal. This lack of additions stands in stark contrast to the inclusion of at least one new Dragon-type card in the form of Druddigon.
This dearth of Metal-type cards leads to implications beyond mere variety for players who prefer mono-type decks. The current selection offers minimal competitive strength, which stymies strategies that might otherwise leverage Metal-types effectively. Given that Psychic-types currently hold a notable advantage—unhindered by strong counters—this could mean an ongoing surge in their usage.
The Metal-Type Conundrum
Understandably, players have expressed their frustrations regarding the neglect of Metal-types in various forums, especially in a popular thread on the game’s dedicated subreddit. Participants there have been vocal about the diminishing prospects for Metal-types, expressing disappointment at their lack of integration into the latest set.
One player highlighted the potential consequences of this oversight, noting, “Even worse when you consider that the Florges line not only is brutal but is weak to something that never gets used in battle. It’s going to be a match winner in Psychic decks for a while.” Such reflections indicate a broader concern about the competitive balance within the game as Psychic-types thrive without adequate counters.
Critics of the expansion also pointed out that this absence complicates premium missions—some of which necessitate the collection of specific quantities of certain types. A number of players suggested that these tasks should be reevaluated, proposing implications for their removal from premium quests altogether.
In the current landscape, without any Metal-type cards in the Mythical Island expansion, players have little choice but to revisit the Genetic Apex boosters to fulfill any related quest requirements. One frustrated participant noted, “I’m annoyed because I want to put all my packs into pulling Mythical Island but also I need to pull like four Metal-types for my last premium subscription mission.”
As it stands, the developers of Pokémon TCG Pocket have yet to unveil a specific timeline for the next significant set release, merely indicating it is scheduled for sometime in 2025. In the interim, players may face yet another prolonged period of Psychic-type prevalence in PvP scenarios.
