The Pokemon Company has taken action to address concerns from fans about questionable submissions to the Pokemon TCG’s yearly Illustration Contest. Several submissions have been withdrawn due to allegations involving AI.
The Pokemon community is known for its artistic members, and fan-made crossovers with Elden Ring often go viral on the internet. The annual Illustration Contest held by the Pokemon TCG provides a formal opportunity for talented fans to showcase their artwork.
On June 14, the Pokemon Company announced the top 300 entrants who will be moving onto the next round of the Contest. However, this announcement was met with some controversy as there were accusations of cheating and use of AI among the Pokemon artists who submitted their work for the opportunity to be featured in the popular trading card game franchise.
Following a period of more than one week without a response, the Pokemon Company has finally addressed the accusations. As a result, it has chosen to disqualify specific participants from the 2024 Illustration Contest due to their violation of the event’s regulations.

When the initial top 300 list was released, observant fans noticed some questionable entries that appeared to have passed the screening process. Specifically, there were six entries from the same artist with similar names, such as Vigen K, Vigen Khachadoorian, Vigo K, and Vigo Khachadoorian.
Each of these entries displayed a similar art style and, when combined with the listed names, seemed to go against a rule that permits only three submissions per participant.
In addition, there were several indications that the work may have utilized generative AI in some way, which was also a violation of the rules.
So why are you letting people violate the max entry rule so blatantly and with entries that are very likely ai generated? pic.twitter.com/rpHDm77fZv

The Pokemon Company’s statement is somewhat ambiguous and refrains from identifying the participants who will be disqualified from the top 300. Additionally, it does not explicitly mention the use of AI as the cause for their disqualification.
According to the statement, it has been brought to our attention that certain participants who were among the top 300 finalists in the Pokemon TCG Illustration Contest 2024 have failed to adhere to the official contest rules. As a consequence, these participants have been disqualified from the contest.
Thankfully, the disqualified entrants due to the suspicious submissions being chosen are being replaced by those who followed the rules. As of now, the top 300 entries have remained the same.
