Pokemon Scarlet & Violet professional players are adjusting to the latest rotation rules, and a previously overlooked Pokemon Sword & Shield contender is quickly rising in popularity within the community due to the allowance of one Legendary Pokemon on all teams.
The Legendary Zamazenta from Pokemon Shield gained significant popularity among Trainers participating in the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet VGC Regionals held in Stockholm, with 25% of all Restricted Pokemon being Zamazenta.
Calyrex Ice Rider ranks second with 21.9%, followed by Terapagos at 15.6%. The most surprising change is the significant decrease in popularity for Zacian, a previous fan-favorite. In the Pokemon Sword & Shield era, this dual Fairy/Steel-type Legendary was known for its immense strength, but it has now fallen to just 3.1% in the rankings.
A fan of Pokemon VGC, known as Cbutty, shared their thoughts on the latest rankings on X, specifically questioning the performance of Zamazenta. Cbutty’s post on Twitter, which included a list of the top 9 Restricted Pokemon, sparked a discussion on the topic.

Numerous other Pokemon enthusiasts are sharing their theories regarding this significant upset in the comments. One individual stated, “It’s not much of a surprise, just a realization of how well Zama can counter Caly-I and Terapagos.”
One user also mentions, “It even has Body Press, which is significant,”while a different comment reads, “If you had told someone during the Crown Tundra that Zamazenta would be used more than Zacian in VGC, they would have laughed at you.”
As more events are expected ahead of Pokemon Worlds 2024, it is likely that many fans are already strategizing the best way to prepare for Zamazenta in the future.
