As the fourth Straw Hat pirate to join the crew, Usopp is often seen as one of the weaker members. His story began in the Syrup Village arc, where he was characterized by cowardice, dishonesty, and unfortunate circumstances.

Initially, Usopp’s tendency to fabricate tales about pirate attacks arose from a desire to uplift his mother’s spirits. However, this coping mechanism transformed into a habit following the loss of his mother and the abandonment by his father, Yasopp. Eventually, Syrup Village became the hideout of the Black Cat Pirates, led by Captain Kuro, a pivotal antagonist early in the series.

Despite Usopp uncovering Kuro’s true nature, his track record of deceit caused others to doubt him. Consequently, he had to lean on Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats to expel Captain Kuro and the Black Cat Pirates who were threatening his village.

During the conflict with the Black Cat Pirates, Usopp did not confront Kuro directly, and his lack of combat skills became evident as he struggled against even weaker foes. His initial encounter in Elbaf features a battle against a giant cat, from which he chose to flee instead of fighting, regardless of his growth in power and experience since the Syrup Village saga.

Although Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji eventually took down the cat, Usopp’s failure to do so might rekindle memories of the Black Cat Pirates and his inability to stand against Captain Kuro. His ongoing struggle with combat and his cowardly tendencies have consistently plagued him. However, this may prompt a reflection on his past encounters, motivating him to align himself with the giants in a bid to transform into the brave warrior he dreams of becoming.

Concluding Thoughts

Chapter 1127 of One Piece is scheduled for an official release on September 22, 2024, marking the commencement of the Elbaf arc. The evolution of Usopp’s character has been one of the most anticipated developments in the series. While the upcoming chapters will largely focus on presenting Elbaf, Usopp’s growth promises to be a pivotal theme, intertwining his aspiration to become a warrior with the overarching ideals cherished by the giants.
