Fans have been given a long-awaited look at the upcoming Alien: Earth, but will the series finally validate a longstanding Xenomorph fan theory that originated in Prometheus?
In 2092, thirty years prior to the events of Alien, a group of soldiers are tasked with investigating a strange spaceship that has landed on Earth.
As the headline suggests, the topic will be in some way connected to the enduring danger of the Xenomorphs.
This could potentially cause continuity problems for the rest of the franchise. In 2012’s Prometheus, it was established that Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway found the last pieces of the Star Map in 2089, three years prior to the events of Alien: Earth.
In Prometheus, it was determined that the Engineers were responsible for the creation of humanity. However, there is a plot point that becomes peculiar when considering subsequent changes to the story. The movie hints at the possibility that the Engineers also played a role in the development of the Xenomorphs.
Ultimately, Alien: Covenant disproves this theory as the film strongly suggests that the Xenomorphs are a product of long-term experimentation and cross-breeding conducted by the android David. However, the movie only depicts David’s creation of the predecessor Protomorph.
Despite its imperfections, the David theory has gained widespread acceptance among fans. However, it fails to account for the presence of a religious sculpture of a Xenomorph in the Engineer base.
Earth could potentially clear the air with the release of Alien, set before the events of Prometheus. This allows for a deeper exploration of the origins of the Xenomorphs and their creation.
Despite the limited information available, it has been confirmed that Alien: Earth will be helmed by Noah Hawley, renowned for his work on FX’s Fargo and Legion. A release date for the series has not been announced yet, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2025.
