Possible Discrimination Against Asian Actors in Top Gun: Maverick – Edited Scenes Without Warning

According to reports from Variety and other international sources on July 17, Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto revealed behind-the-scenes insights about the upcoming film “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Additionally, Manny Jacinto made an appearance in the Disney+ series “The Acolyte”alongside Lee Jung-jae, which received considerable recognition within the country.

Prior to his role in “The Acolyte” , a part of the renowned “Star Wars” franchise, he had already been cast in “Top Gun: Maverick” and had completed filming. Despite this, his lines were ultimately omitted and he only made brief appearances in a few background scenes.

During an interview with GQ magazine, Jacinto recounted, “I wasn’t surprised. I had sensed it while on set. The camera seemed to focus more on the other actors, and my scenes were given less screen time.”

Nevertheless, he was unaware that his role would be significantly diminished until shortly before the release. Jacinto remained determined and stated, “It falls on us, as Asian Americans and people of color, to pave the way for more significant narratives. We must take charge and create them ourselves.”

“He commented, “Even though I was just a small part of a massive franchise, it was still a valuable experience for me to witness how Tom Cruise operates on such a large project.”

Jacinto allegedly spent several months training with actual members of the military in order to prepare for his role in “Top Gun: Maverick”, but ultimately his scenes were removed from the film.
