Possible End for Dino Crisis Franchise

Possible End for Dino Crisis Franchise

Shinji Mikami, the original creator, has shared his perspective on the possibility of a Dino Crisis remake being successful in today’s gaming industry.

During an interview with Eurogamer at Gamescom 2024, the experienced developer expressed that he believes a Dino Crisis reboot would have limited success in today’s market due to the overwhelming popularity of the Monster Hunter franchise.

Despite being surprised by the enduring love fans have for the series, Mikami also raised concerns about the monopolization of dinosaurs in gaming by Monster Hunter. He pointed out that the game has effectively cornered the market on dinosaur-related content and capabilities, stating, “The sheer awesomeness of dinosaurs and the endless possibilities they offer have been expertly captured by Monster Hunter in recent times.”

Despite my potential interest in creating a remake or new version of Dino Crisis, I don’t believe there is much room for that type of game at the moment. With the immense popularity of Monster Hunter, it seems there may not be much demand for a similar game. Nevertheless, I am still surprised by the success of Monster Hunter.

Mikami acknowledged that while Dino Crisis and Monster Hunter are distinct genres, there is still a possibility for the two to coexist. He stated, “The concept of Monster Hunter is quite different from Dino Crisis.”

In 2024, Mikami will be working elsewhere, although both franchises are owned by Capcom. This suggests that even if a remake of Dino Crisis were to be developed, Mikami would not be leading the project. This was also the case with the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4, as Mikami was the creative force behind the original releases but was not involved in the remakes.

As Capcom continues to remake more Resident Evil games, it is possible that they may eventually run out of titles to remake. In that case, a Dino Crisis remake could become a possibility, especially if it follows the same template as the current Resident Evil remakes. This is because the original Dino Crisis game was based on the gameplay of the original Resident Evil, which was released in 1999.
