Unfortunately, it appears that fans hoping for an Interstellar IMAX re-release will be disappointed as the prints seem to have been destroyed.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi masterpiece Interstellar was scheduled to re-release in IMAX theaters in September. The film was a box office success upon its initial release and has since garnered even more praise and recognition.
Regrettably, it appears that the release may be extremely limited at most. As reported by the fan account Christopher Nolan Art & Updates, Paramount may have discarded the original Interstellar IMAX reels.
The report states that Nolan was not notified about the supposed destruction of the prints. It further states that he had asked Paramount to replace the prints, but they declined to do so. This loss of the reels would most likely result in the cancellation of any plans for re-releasing Interstellar.
Without those prints, the film would only be available for screening in a limited number of theaters that had kept their IMAX prints from 2015. This would be a very small number of theaters, as they usually do not own the reels but rather rent them from studios.
Although Interstellar is a Warner Bros film, Paramount Pictures was in charge of distributing the film in North America. Their responsibilities included delivering reels to theaters and collecting them after showings.
Although Interstellar was released in the more traditional 35mm and 70mm film formats, Nolan has always expressed a preference for the 70mm IMAX format and encouraged viewers to watch that version of the film. In fact, at the time of its release, Interstellar had the widest IMAX release and IMAX screenings were consistently sold out for weeks.
The Interstellar re-release, which was revealed in April and originally set for September 27, 2024, briefly had pre-order links for tickets available on AMC websites. However, those pages have now been removed.
