<p>The anticipation for Magic: The Gathering Foundations is building. While veteran players will relish the familiar cards making a comeback, we’re excited to unveil a fresh addition to the set: Cat Collector.
This new installment follows two creatively rich sets, Bloomburrow and Duskmourn: House of Horror, and marks a return to more traditional gameplay in Magic: The Gathering. Although it may not shine as brightly as other upcoming releases in the jam-packed 2024/2025 lineup – filled with collaborations like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man – Foundations occupies an essential niche.
Created as an ideal entry point for beginners, Foundations emphasizes the reintroduction of iconic cards that offer a comprehensive understanding of the trading card game’s foundational mechanics. New players can feel confident that this set provides an excellent way to delve into Magic, while experienced players can eagerly anticipate the comeback of beloved classic cards.
Cat Collector is a creature card that costs 2W to cast, enabling you to unleash its namesake abilities. Upon entering the battlefield, this card allows you to create a Food Token, which can be tapped to gain life, while also generating a 1/1 White Cat token the first time you gain life each turn.
The synergy with White’s life-gain strategies is strong, and it bolsters the growing theme of Cats within MTG Foundations. Combining Cat Collector with a card like Arahbo, the First Fang, which boosts Cats’ power and toughness, significantly enhances the effectiveness of the tokens it produces.
While it may not be the top choice in limited formats immediately, if you’re already building a token or Cat-themed deck, Cat Collector can seamlessly integrate into your Draft or Sealed strategy. Its true potential may unveil itself as a valuable one-off card in Token-centric Commander decks, such as Baylen the Haymaker.
In addition to its reliable token creation, Cat Collector boasts breathtaking artwork by the talented Chris Seaman, known for iconic cards such as The Meathook Massacre, Morbid Opportunist, and Ocelot Pride. Let’s take a closer look at the artwork below.
Magic: The Gathering Foundations is set to be released on November 15, 2024, making it a perfect opportunity to introduce your friends to the hobby with thoughtful holiday gifts.
If you’re interested in using Foundations as your starting point, local stores within the Wizards Play Network will be hosting pre-release events to celebrate the launch.
