Pro GeoGuessr Grows in Popularity with Six-Figure Competition

Pro GeoGuessr is rapidly expanding, highlighted by the 2024 World Cup featuring a $100,000 prize pool that attracted three times the viewers compared to last year’s event.

While GeoGuessr may not immediately come to mind when considering upcoming esports, its recent growth puts it on the radar. The game is centered around deducing locations on Google Maps, but it has gained a following thanks to notable fans like Ludwig and exceptional players like Rainbolt, whose skills make the game entertaining to watch.

This year, the World Cup achieved record-breaking viewership and prize distribution, showcasing significant growth in the community.

The competition kicked off at the beginning of 2024 with a $100,000 prize pool split among the qualifiers and main events, culminating in a final LAN tournament featuring a $50,000 prize.

Additionally, Twitch subscriptions contributed to the pool, and in-game cosmetics also provided crowdfunding opportunities, with the champion taking home the total prize.

Viewership statistics soared. On September 14, during the Grand Finals match between Blinky and MK, the broadcast peaked at an impressive 254,918 concurrent viewers, according to Esports Charts.

In comparison, the previous year’s event peaked at 71,252 concurrent viewers, indicating GeoGuessr has significantly increased its audience, even competing with popular games like Overwatch 2.

While it might not yet rival top-tier esports like Valorant or Counter-Strike, the growth of GeoGuessr demonstrates its potential within the gaming community.

“Oh wow. What a night. We had over 200,000 concurrent viewers watching the finals,” the GeoGuessr X (formerly Twitter) account tweeted. “We are so grateful to all of you who tuned in. Thank you so much.”

Blinky ultimately claimed the title, securing the 2024 World Cup trophy in a tightly contested Grand Final with a score of 3-2, as MK nearly achieved a reverse sweep.

Now is an ideal time to dive into the competitive world of GeoGuessr if you haven’t already.
