According to a recent report, HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series has seemingly cast its Severus Snape, while simultaneously stirring speculation regarding another key character’s portrayal.
The Harry Potter film franchise remains a monumental success, revered for its cinematic brilliance and outstanding performances by some of the finest actors in the UK. Although opinions vary about the quality of each film, the eight installments are universally acknowledged as intricately crafted blockbusters that have left a lasting legacy.
Over a decade after the release of Deathly Hallows Part 2, HBO is undertaking an ambitious project to create a seven-season adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s esteemed book series, featuring an entirely new cast. While the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley have yet to be officially filled, there are whispers about potential candidates for other significant roles. Reports suggest that acclaimed actor Mark Rylance may be in consideration to play Dumbledore, although this remains unverified.
Janet McTeer Considered for Professor McGonagall Role
Feature First has reported that Janet McTeer, known for her work in Ozark, The Menu, and KAOS, is a leading candidate to portray Professor Minerva McGonagall in the upcoming HBO series.
While this announcement has not been covered by major news outlets, Feature First had previously revealed information about Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Severus Snape—a detail later substantiated by The Hollywood Reporter. This suggests that their sourcing could be credible.
While it is prudent to approach this casting rumor with cautious optimism, McTeer emerges as a fitting choice. With her exceptional prowess as a British actress and her age of 63, she would be 66 when the series is slated to premiere in 2027. This is nearly identical to Maggie Smith’s age at the start of the original Harry Potter films.
During a recent conference, Warner Bros Discovery’s streaming chief, HB Perrette, expressed enthusiasm about the series, stating, “As we look forward to 2026 and into 2027, we embark on a 10-year journey with the Harry Potter franchise, and we believe it could become one of the most significant events as we approach its release.”
Stay tuned for more updates as Harris point towards a new chapter in the magical world of Harry Potter.
