Prosecutors Appeal Actor Yoo Ah-in’s 1-Year Prison Sentence for Drug Use

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office appealed on September 4th for a stricter punishment for Yoo Ah-in, who was initially sentenced to one year in prison and a 2 million KRW fine (equivalent to approximately 1,500 USD) for consistent drug abuse. His charges included 181 counts of propofol use, 44 instances of obtaining sleeping pills under a false identity, marijuana use, and an attempt to tamper with evidence.

The prosecution clarified the purpose of their appeal, citing the severity of the offenses, which included consistent use of drugs like marijuana, propofol, and zolpidem for an extended period of time, as well as instructing others to destroy evidence in order to impede justice. They expressed their dissatisfaction with the sentence given, which was considerably less than the four-year imprisonment they had requested.

Following the verdict of the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 25 (Presiding Judge Ji Gwi-yeon), Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay a 2 million KRW fine. Additionally, the court mandated that he undergo 80 hours of drug rehabilitation education and pay an extra 1.54 million KRW. Due to concerns about potential flight risks, Yoo Ah-in was immediately detained by the court following the sentencing. It should be noted that he was acquitted of certain charges pertaining to tampering with evidence.

During the same time period, Yoo Ah-in faced allegations of administering propofol 181 times from September 2020 to March 2023. Additionally, it was claimed that he illegally obtained sleeping pills under someone else’s name from May 2021 to August 2022.
