On May 24th, Chief Prosecutor Lee Gon-ho of Criminal Division 1 in the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office announced that their request to seize some assets of YouTuber A (female, 35 years old) has been granted by the court. YouTuber A is currently facing charges of defamation and insult under The Act of Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection.

The assets that have been confiscated from A this time include properties and deposit bonds worth approximately 200 million won. Seizing assets is a precautionary measure to prevent the suspect from transferring or selling specific assets until a verdict is reached. The prosecution intends to recover more than 200 million won, which is the amount of A’s criminal gains, in accordance with the court’s ruling.

A has been accused of defaming seven prominent individuals, including well-known personalities and social media influencers, through 23 slanderous videos posted on their YouTube channel, “Sojang”. The channel was active from October 2021 to June of the previous year. According to reports, A propagated numerous false allegations about various celebrities, with a particular focus on IVE member Jang Won-young in their videos.

Following the prosecution’s examination of the YouTube account “Sojang”, it was discovered that A had accumulated 250 million won within a span of two years. A prosecutor stated, “On the 9th, we submitted a request for a pre-indictment asset seizure, which was recently approved by the court.”They further added, “We are determined to fully reclaim the profits of the individual responsible for spreading false information and defaming the victims, in order to prevent any future occurrence of such crimes.”
