On July 8th, Newsis reported that the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency stated, “On June 27th, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit sent police officer A from the Incheon Police Agency and investigator B from the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office to the prosecution for allegedly leaking official secrets and violating the Personal Information Protection Act.”
“Four journalists who obtained personal information, either directly or indirectly, have been sent to the prosecution without being detained on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act,”they stated.
Police officer A, who has been transferred to the prosecution, is being charged with leaking a report on the ongoing investigation into Lee Sun-kyun’s drug case to members of the press. It is worth noting that A is employed in a department that does not deal with drug-related offenses.
Three journalists have been identified as having either directly obtained the report or indirectly confirmed its contents through A.
It is alleged that Investigator B from the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office contacted a journalist from a local daily newspaper in the Gyeonggi area and disclosed that Lee Sun-kyun was being investigated by the police. As a result, the media outlet published an exclusive report on October 19th of last year, stating that an internal investigation was ongoing regarding drug charges.
In October of last year, Lee Sun-kyun was investigated by the police for drug use. Despite being summoned for questioning three times, he was discovered deceased on December 27th in Waryong Park, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
