Episode 1 Recap of Wistoria: Wand and Sword

The opening scene showcases the grandeur of the Rigarden Magic Academy, a place where mages hold all the power. Despite being a bespectacled boy, Will Serfort is unable to perform any magic spells.

Despite his inability to use magic, Will is determined to become a Magia Vander and fulfill the promise he made to his childhood friend, Elfaria. He dedicates himself to honing his swordsmanship skills in a dungeon and earns credits at the academy.

Despite his inability to use magic, Will is constantly humiliated by Edward Serfens, a professor at Rigarden Magic Academy. Theon Ulster, a noble’s son, also joins in on the mockery, showcasing his superiority as a mage by casting a powerful spell.

Despite Ulster’s negative remarks, Colette Rowal is the only one who sees the kind side of Will Serfort and even defends him. As they both gaze at the sky, Will reflects on the beauty of the day, and the two share a brief moment.

The episode introduces the backstory of the anime, revealing that humanity was once trapped in darkness and faced a threat from the “Invaders from the Heavens.”In response, five powerful mages emerged to defend against them.

Ever since they repelled the invaders, cast a seal upon the sky, and freed humanity from the constraints of darkness, the five mages were known as Magia Vander. This title has since been awarded to the country’s most powerful mages.

Above the sky, the Magia Vanders reside, keeping a watchful eye over all. The scene then shifts to a flashback, in which Will is shown making a vow to Elfaria that one day they will join the ranks of the Magia Vanders.

Despite Will’s disappointment in not being able to fulfill his promise, he remains resilient as Elfaria is announced as the youngest mage to ever become Magia Vander.

Afterward, he is summoned by Professor Workner, who scolds him for going into the dangerous dungeons by himself in search of credits. He harshly reinforces the fact that he cannot become a Magia Vander unless he masters magic.

Workner also informs him that in addition to passing the tests at Rigarden, he must also succeed in earning four credits, a requirement for advancing to the next year. However, unlike Edward, Workner recognizes Will’s determination and reveals to him the whereabouts of a powerful monster that can aid him in achieving this goal.

Surprisingly, Ulster overhears their conversation and joins his two friends as they make their way to the sixth floor of the dungeon. However, upon reaching their destination, the boy and his team are faced with a more formidable monster than they anticipated.

Despite Ulster’s attempts to use magic against the monster, he soon realizes that his death is inevitable. But in a moment of desperation, Will Serfort arrives just in time to save him. The boy’s unorthodox fighting skills prove to be exceptional in a world dominated by magic.

Edward visits Workner’s office to ask about Ulster and his companions. The professor, who wears glasses, reassures him that there is no need to worry as Will is at the destination. He explains that Will is the sole fighter in a realm filled with magic.

The episode highlights Will Serfort’s intense assaults as he defeats a formidable monster, valued at ten credits. Despite rescuing Ulster in the end, Workner reprimands the boy. However, he also recognizes Will’s efforts and rewards him with ten credits.
