Jack Thorne, the creator of Netflix’s compelling series Adolescence, has issued a cautionary note regarding Louis Theroux’s documentary Inside the Manosphere. This four-part British series delves into the harrowing aftermath when 13-year-old Jamie (portrayed by Owen Cooper) is arrested for the tragic murder of his classmate Katie (played by Emilia Holliday), a violent act that stems from a cycle of rejection and cyberbullying.

The narrative explores how Jamie’s perception of women is heavily influenced by incel culture and the content of manosphere figures, notably Andrew Tate. It emphasizes the perilous impact of social media algorithms on young minds, highlighting the urgent need to address these influences.

In a recent discussion with the Independent during the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, Thorne praised Theroux’s documentary as “brilliant, ” while emphasizing that the British government must enhance its efforts to mitigate the influence of contentious online figures on children.

Thorne articulated his concern, stating, “The issue of the manosphere remains prevalent. Louis Theroux’s outstanding documentary has brought it back into public consciousness, but tackling this problem requires a nuanced approach. It seems the government may not be fully engaged in tackling some of these intricate issues.”

In essence, Thorne posits that although streaming platforms like Netflix are successfully highlighting concerns surrounding the manosphere, tangible government action is essential to protect young individuals from its harmful impacts.

Following the release of Adolescence in March 2025, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared his discomfort with the series during an interview with the BBC, remarking that as a parent, he found the content challenging. He underscored the complexity of the issue, stating: “There isn’t an obvious policy response that will address all these challenges.”

Starmer noted the broader cultural implications of this issue, urging for societal engagement in discussions and solutions. He expressed satisfaction that Adolescence will be made available for free in UK schools, highlighting the imperative for young people to engage with its themes.

In a progressive move, Netflix provided access to Adolescence at no cost for secondary schools in the UK through the Into Film+ initiative.
