Buyer Discovers Used Switch 2 Console is Bricked by Nintendo

In a surprising turn of events, a Nintendo enthusiast recently experienced disappointment after purchasing a second-hand Switch 2 console, discovering a considerable catch with their acquisition.

In a post shared on the Switch 2 subreddit, the user recounted their excitement after diligently checking local Walmart stores for the sought-after console between shifts. Their persistence paid off when they finally found one in stock and couldn’t believe their luck.

Despite knowing the console was an open box return, a store employee informed them that the system included a used Mario Kart World code, but otherwise, everything else seemed to be in pristine condition. However, upon returning home and completing the initial setup, the user encountered an alarming issue.

After booting the system, they were greeted with a troubling message: “Get home and go to finish the setup – quickly get Error Code 2124-4508. A quick Google search shows me I’m screwed. F**k my life.”

Understanding Error Code 2124-4508

The error message associated with the code 2124-4508 states, “The use of online services on this console is currently restricted by Nintendo.” While the term “currently” implies a possibility of a temporary ban, Nintendo Support clarifies that this indicates a permanent ban from online services due to violations of user agreements.

Among the reasons for a ban, “fraudulent or unauthorized transactions” are noted. However, this is not the only infraction that could lead to such restrictions. Recent updates to Nintendo’s User Agreement highlight that any modifications to the device—especially those enabling piracy—can result in a console and/or associated account being rendered “permanently unusable, in whole or in part.”

Earlier this month, instances have emerged where Switch 2 owners reported being banned after using third-party cartridges or devices like the MIG-Switch, leading to similar problems.

Fortunately for this disappointed user, Walmart handled the situation smoothly and accepted the return without hassle.
