This sorrowful story emerges from Shandong province, where an elderly woman in her 80s, who suffers from heart disease, faced the unbearable loss of her son due to a fatal car crash. Concerned about her health and emotional well-being, the family opted to shield her from the reality of his passing.

The son of the deceased took the initiative and sought out AI specialist Zhang Zewe to explore the feasibility of creating a digital version of his father. In this innovative endeavor, the family supplied the AI experts with an extensive collection of photographs, videos, and audio recordings to ensure the digital twin would authentically represent the man’s likeness and personality.

Interactive AI Companionship

As reported by the South China Morning Post, the AI operates through a video calling application, where the mother engages with her son daily. In these virtual interactions, the AI maintains that he is away working in a different city, providing a plausible explanation for his absence.

During their conversations, the mother expresses her care and concern, advising her AI son to take good care of himself while lamenting how much she misses him. The AI responds in kind, echoing her sentiments and assuring her of his well-being.

Remarkably, the AI’s representation is reportedly very close to the original, not only in appearance but also in mannerisms, such as leaning in while listening—a habit the man was known for.

While Zhang acknowledges that their work may be perceived as “deceiving people’s emotions, ”he defends the project by stating their intention is to “comfort the living.” This technological advancement raises profound ethical questions about grief, loss, and the lengths individuals will go to protect their loved ones from pain.
