For several weeks, a widely used perk in Black Ops 6 has been malfunctioning, significantly reducing its effectiveness, yet players remain largely unaware of this issue.
Perks play a crucial role in tailoring a player’s class to suit individual styles. Whether you prefer the aggressive playstyle of a Double Time user, charging into battle, or the strategic setup of a Quartermaster, stocking up on grenades and utility, perks enhance gameplay dynamics.
Among these, the Gearhead perk stands out, particularly for those who want to maximize the potential of Field Upgrades in Black Ops 6 multiplayer mode. Unlocked at level 50, Gearhead enables players to hack enemy equipment, booby trap care packages, and benefits them with two field upgrade charges along with a faster charge rate.
Gearhead Perk Issues in Black Ops 6
Unfortunately, Gearhead has not been delivering its promised increased charge rate for field upgrades over the past few weeks. Evidence submitted by players, such as a recent Reddit post, illustrates this problem. A user demonstrated through screenshots from two private matches that, regardless of using Gearhead, their trophy system required the same two-minute charge time.

As noted by COD expert XclusiveAce in a video published on December 18, this bug is one of the critical issues requiring immediate attention in the game.
The problem is particularly pronounced for players engaged in Search and Destroy, where progress resets at the end of each round. As noted by one commenter, even if a player manages to earn the second field upgrade, it disappears when the round resets.
Gearhead is designed to be one of the most powerful perks, enabling players to access an additional piece of high-impact equipment, such as the trophy system. However, with the current hindrance on charge rates, its utility diminishes substantially, making it less appealing compared to other strong perks available in the third perk slot, including Double Time and Cold Blooded.
Players are hoping that Treyarch will address the Gearhead malfunction in an upcoming patch or at least provide clarity on the ongoing issue and any efforts to resolve it.
