Elden Ring developer’s parent company falls victim to cyberattack

The parent company of FromSoftware has experienced a significant ransomware attack, putting the data of the Elden Ring developer at risk of being exposed.

FromSoftware, the developer of Elden Ring, should be feeling elated at the moment following the immense success of their Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Despite facing some minor challenges with Steam Ratings, the expansion received positive reviews and even prominent streamer Asmongold has retracted his previous complaints.

Nevertheless, the company is currently facing a significant threat as its parent corporation Kadokawa Group has recently experienced a major data breach.

On June 8, 2024, the Kadokawa Group confirmed a major cyberattack, as initially reported by IGN. The corporation released an update on June 27, providing further information about the attack.

FromSoftware may have had an invader of its very own.

The hacker group responsible for the breach has issued a statement claiming that they have successfully obtained 1.5 TB of data through the ransomware attack. This data includes confidential information, as well as the personal details of both employees and clients. The perpetrators have threatened to publish this data on July 1, 2024.

According to Kadokawa Group, Niconico, the popular Japanese video-sharing site, has been severely affected by the breach. In response, all services for the website have been temporarily suspended since June 8 as Kadokawa Group focuses on implementing safety measures and finding solutions to get it back up and running.

Despite not being explicitly referenced in the report, the potential impact of the ransomware attack on FromSoftware remains uncertain. Considering the past instances of hacking at other game studios like Insomniac Games and Rockstar, it is natural to feel some apprehension.

Kadokawa Group is currently collaborating with “external professional organizations”to investigate the breach. We will closely monitor any updates on the potential effects this may have on the Elden Ring developer.
