G-Dragon’s Controversial Performance at MAMA 2025: A Closer Look
On November 29, G-Dragon captivated audiences at the Kai Tak Stadium with his performances of hits like “Drama”, “Heartbreaker”, and “Untitled, 2025”. Nevertheless, his live vocal delivery drew significant backlash, as many viewers pointed out inconsistencies throughout his singing, even during delicate ballads. Critics noted a heavy dependence on pre-recorded audio, raising questions about his authenticity and professionalism on stage.
In an intriguing turn of events, G-Dragon responded to the criticisms by leaving a thumbs-down emoji on his official performance video shared by the awards show’s account. This gesture was interpreted by many as a self-reflective acknowledgment of the issues raised about his vocal performance.
Despite the backlash, he showed support for his fans by “liking” a post that defended him. The fan shared a direct performance video and expressed, “This controversy feels unjust. Let’s reassess the situation. G-Dragon is human and likely experienced immense pressure—especially with the tragic recent events in Hong Kong. Please fact-check before concluding. I am proud of his performance. GD remains GD, and he performed admirably live.”

In a follow-up to the public discourse, G-Dragon’s agency issued a statement on December 1, clarifying that the artist had initially planned to present “Drama” and “Heartbreaker”. However, in light of a tragic apartment fire in Hong Kong, he quickly adjusted his setlist to include “Untitled, 2025.” The agency emphasized that G-Dragon performed with profound sincerity, aiming to comfort the affected community and honor the victims of the tragedy. They noted, “His quiet yet impactful sincerity resonated powerfully with those present.”

This incident isn’t an isolated occurrence; G-Dragon has faced similar critiques in previous performances, notably during the SBS Gayo Daejeon last year and his solo concert in Goyang earlier this March.
With his upcoming encore concert for the “Übermensch” world tour scheduled for December 14 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, fans are eager to see if G-Dragon can rebound from this latest critique and reclaim his status onstage.
