30fps Expected at Launch for GTA 6 on Consoles

During an interview with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz, former Rockstar animator Mike York shared his predictions concerning the frame rate for GTA 6. Regrettably for console enthusiasts, he advised them to prepare for a launch frame rate of 30fps.

Many fans had harbored hopes for experiencing the game at 60fps, but York was not optimistic. He remarked, “I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60fps. I don’t think so. I think they’re gonna be shooting for 30fps” with a stabilization that ensures it does not dip below that frame rate.

However, York suggested that it may be possible for developers to improve this limitation through updates after the game’s launch. He noted, “They’re gonna try to optimize as much as they can so it never goes below 30. But it can be bumped up to 40, 41, 52, whatever.”

For those looking to attain the best performance, York indicated that PC gaming would deliver superior experiences. Yet, this benefit might come with a waiting period. He explained, “Later, once it’s on PC, it’ll probably get super optimized and new graphics cards will come out, allowing you to run it at 60fps probably at that time.”

York also touched on the potential for AI upscaling to enable enhanced performance on upcoming consoles like the PS5 Pro, though he ultimately doubted the capability of current-generation consoles to run the game at 60fps natively. While this reality may align with the expectations of pragmatic gamers, it could shatter the dreams of those holding onto hope for higher frame rates at launch.
