KATSEYE ‘Debut’ Draws Mixed Reactions From K-Netz: ‘It Feels Cheap…’

Despite KATEYE’s recent debut with their single “Debut,”the response from Korean netizens has been mixed.

KATSEYE, the US girl group under HYBE Label, officially debuted on June 28 with their single “Debut.”The group was created through the reality talent show “The Debut: Dream Academy”and is made up of Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoonchae.

The single is the first preview of the girl group’s forthcoming mini-album, “SIS (Soft Is Strong),”set to be released on August 16, 2024.

Shortly after their debut, Korean netizens flocked to online community forums and social media platforms to express their thoughts. The majority were underwhelmed by the girl group’s debut, citing two main reasons: the song and the music video.

Despite receiving positive feedback and being deemed as a good song by many, the general agreement was that it was too brief. With a duration of just over two minutes, there was a general belief that the song would have been improved if it had been lengthened. It is probable that there was insufficient development between the verses, chorus, and bridge to captivate listeners.

Despite this, individuals still argued that the music video did not meet their expectations in terms of quality. They mentioned that it gave off a cheap vibe and even made jokes about the budget possibly being only $1,000 USD. Additionally, there were also concerns about the choreography of the song, as some Korean netizens found it to be peculiar.

Despite SM Entertainment’s success in selecting visually appealing members for their upcoming UK-based boy group, KATSEYE faced criticism for not having the same appeal to attract an Asian fan base. However, Manon received recognition for her stunning visuals.

Several comments were read,

  • “Why is the music video quality and choreography like that?”
  • “Why was the song so short? Besides that, it was fine.”
  • “The song is way too short.”
  • “The music video feels cheap.”
  • “The song is good, but the music video…”
  • “The song is nice. All the members look charming.”
  • “Manon is so pretty!”
  • “It feels like their budget for the music video was just $1,000.”
  • “The song was good.”
  • “Wow. Looking at this, I can see SM did a good job selecting faces that Asians would like for their UK boy group…”
