In the closing moments of the epic saga of Stranger Things, Noah Schnapp, the actor portraying Will Byers, sensed an unresolved tension between Will and Mike. His feeling prompted him to request that the show’s creators craft an additional scene to enhance this storyline.

One of the pivotal moments in the series occurs at the end of the penultimate episode, where Will bravely comes out to his friends and family. During this heartfelt revelation, he confesses his feelings for someone special, acknowledging, “even though I know, I know they’re not like me.” While it is clear he is referring to Mike, the depth of this sub-plot was initially understated in the original scripts. It wasn’t until Schnapp communicated with the Duffer brothers that this narrative would receive the attention it deserved.

Reflecting on the finale, Schnapp shared with People, “I did feel there was a little bit left unsaid. I spoke to the Duffers, and they included a scene in the finale that wasn’t originally there to properly close that story.”

This newly crafted scene unfolds as the group ascends the radio tower, aiming to overcome Vecna and enter the Abyss. It is here that Mike, acknowledging Will’s earlier speech, expresses regret, stating, “I should have been there for you, and I wasn’t. I guess I was just so self-absorbed that I couldn’t see it… I feel like an idiot, and I’m sorry.”

In an empowering response, Will reassures Mike, saying, “You don’t have to be sorry, and you are not an idiot. It’s just that I didn’t even understand it myself for the longest time. I think it needed to happen the way it did. I needed to find my own way. But what matters is that you’re still here, and you still think we can be friends.”

Mike’s heartfelt response of, “Friends?” followed by “No thanks… best friends!” perfectly encapsulates their enduring bond as they continue their climb together.

Schnapp emphasizes the collaborative nature of the show’s creative process, stating, “if something doesn’t work – or if something feels not right – you can speak to them, and they will work with you.” This kind of openness has allowed for rich, nuanced storytelling that resonates with audiences.
