Report: Nintendo Developing New Switch 2 Model for EU Featuring Removable Battery

Nintendo is reportedly developing an updated version of the Switch 2 specifically for the European market, featuring user-replaceable batteries for the console and its Joy-Con 2 controllers. This initiative aligns with the European Union’s forthcoming “right to repair”regulations, which mandate manufacturers to enhance the repairability and maintainability of their devices.

Switch 2 Model: A Response to EU Repair Initiatives

As highlighted by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, the new design aims to simplify battery replacement for users—a notable improvement over the current version, which has a battery that is glued into place and challenging to remove.

This redesign is a direct reaction to new EU legislation, set to roll out in the coming year, aimed at minimizing electronic waste and promoting device sustainability through better repair options.

The anticipated model is designed to facilitate manual battery changes for both the console and the Joy-Con 2 controllers.

For now, these updates will initially target the European region, though there is potential for similar enhancements to be adopted in other markets based on customer demand and regulatory needs.

Additionally, it is worth noting that the battery replacement feature is not limited to the console alone; Joy-Con controllers will also benefit from this upgrade, which involves internal rechargeable batteries.

Up until the present, Nintendo has not issued an official statement confirming the development of this revised model or its availability outside of Europe.

It is important to mention that the EU’s new legislation was confirmed in June 2024 and came into effect shortly thereafter. Member countries are required to implement these regulations by July 2026, mandating adaptations to their national laws.
