Despite its parent company going through reorganization and the studio responsible for it closing down, the series’ fate was secured. The acquisition of the ‘RWBY’ rights by VIZ Media after the shutdown of Rooster Teeth is a reason for joyous celebration.

The revelation at the 2024 Anime Expo sparks a surge of enthusiasm, as Viz Media takes over control of future distribution, production, licensing, and consumer products. ‘RWBY’ was an influential American series with anime influences, produced by the Austin-based company Rooster Teeth and their animation studio. The late animator and writer Monty Oum created the series, which became popular among fans for its distinct storytelling and animation style. While Rooster Teeth has since disbanded, the future of the series is now under the control of VIZ Media.

The partnership between VIZ Media and Rooster Teeth to publish a manga series inspired by the Huntsmen and Huntresses of Remnant was a positive indication. Along with obtaining the rights to the nine-season original run of the ‘RWBY’ animated show, the series is in capable hands for its future. Announced through a video featuring showrunner and co-creator Kerry Shawcross and voice actress Barbara Dunkelman, who portrays Yang Xiao Long, this news brings a sense of consistency and assurance to the devoted fanbase.

Viz Media has released multiple manga adaptations for the popular RWBY franchise, including Shirow Miwa’s take on the web animated series in Shueisha’s Ultra Jump magazine from November 2015 to February 2017. The English edition of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine began publishing the manga in October 2017 and later released it in print. Another manga, titled RWBY: The Official Manga and created by Bunta Kinami, was launched on Shonen Jump+ in December 2018 and concluded in June 2020. Viz Media also released the RWBY manga anthology series.

Despite our anticipation for a tenth season, VIZ Media has recently assured us in a blog post that they are actively considering creating new chapters in the RWBY saga. Additionally, they have confirmed that showrunner and co-creator Kerry Shawcross, a crucial member of the series’ development team, will continue to play a role in the next phase of the franchise. This involvement offers a sense of continuity and reassurance to fans, ensuring that the series will remain faithful to its origins.
