As one of the most memorable scenes in The Boys, Chace Crawford, who stars as The Deep, has revealed his experience shooting the octopus scene was nearly overwhelming as he almost had a panic attack.
Despite the numerous shocking moments in The Boys Season 4, Amazon requested that showrunner Eric Kripke tone down the inclusion of octopus sex.
In the renowned Herogasm episode of Season 3, The Deep is discovered receiving a sexual favor from an octopus, much to the surprise of those who are unfamiliar with the show.
Despite frequently mentioning his passion for sea creatures, portraying it on screen proved to be a step too far for the streaming service, especially for a show like The Boys.
Who can forget The Deep’s Herogasm moment?
Although it was a challenging experience for Crawford, he also faced difficulties during the process. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Gossip Girl actor admitted that he was in complete denial about shooting these scenes.
“As the first day of shooting drew closer, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed and anxious, almost to the point of having a panic attack, 24 hours beforehand.”
“I reached out to Kripke and he was as amazing as always. Despite having a lot on his plate, he always makes time for others. I was concerned about the scene.”
“I was wondering, ‘How can we make this work? What angles should we use? How much nudity is necessary?’ He ended up altering one shot specifically for me, and it turned out to be fantastic.”
Crawford confirmed that there was an intimacy coordinator on set when asked. However, it should be noted that the octopus scene was treated with the same level of privacy as a closed set, with everyone being asked to be quiet and clear out.
“However, the sheer act of picking up the octopus and ending up with a wet octopus in the bed was both humorous and strange. And then, for almost a year, it remained a mystery as to how it would be perceived.”
To his astonishment, the actor shared an anecdote about a fan who showed him a photo of himself dressed in a “Deep”costume with a pink octopus wrapped around him at Comic-Con or a similar event, and he was delighted to hear that “everyone loved it.”
“The response was overwhelmingly positive, man. Although I do receive some teasing, overall it’s great,”he mentioned.
Crawford said the reaction to the scene has been positive
Despite this, Crawford acknowledged that if he had been aware that his character would engage in a sexual relationship with an octopus, he would have had reservations about taking on the role.
He admitted, “I definitely would have. At the time, I was quite worried about how it would turn out, but looking back now, it’s absolutely hilarious and genius.”
Despite The Deep not engaging in sexual activities with an octopus in The Boys Season 4, he continues to maintain a romantic relationship with his partner Ambrosius, who is voiced by the talented Tilda Swinton.
