TikTok star and social media influencer Mikaela Testa was hospitalized after attempting a ‘water fast.’
Mikaela Testa, a content creator, informed her 935,000 Instagram followers that she had been taken to the hospital due to a severe case of appendicitis. She also cautioned them about the dangers of fasting.
The Australian influencer shared in her Instagram story that the nurse informed her she was not allowed to eat anything, even though she had already fasted for 24 hours prior to arriving.
The 24-year-old added, “Next time you feel like trying a water fast from Reddit, remember this. I’m really hungry and all I crave are some chicken tendies.”
Additionally, she posted a picture of herself receiving an intravenous drip in her arm. Another photo shows her sitting in a hospital bed, holding a white cup containing a yellow liquid. She humorously captioned it as “My 0 calorie dinner.”
Water fasting involves abstaining from food and consuming only water. People may choose to water fast for a variety of reasons, such as weight loss, spiritual or religious beliefs, or to address specific health concerns.
Despite not providing an explanation for her decision to water fast in 2022, Mikaela had previously opened up about her experience with being body-shamed online by another content creator. In response, she went on a 48-hour fast and shared with her 2.4 million TikTok followers that she has battled with an eating disorder.
“In her video, she mentioned that she has not stepped out of the house for a week ever since the [fat shaming] comment was passed, as she is unhappy with her appearance and does not want to be seen by anyone.”
I battled an eating disorder from 16 to 21, and it was a major factor in my decision to undergo surgery. I believed it would fix any issues with my mental health. The thought of this disorder resurfacing and returning is daunting, as I do not know how to address it.
