The Pictomancer is a Magical DPS job that draws inspiration from Relm in Final Fantasy 6. Through launching color-themed spells at enemies, this class is able to create magical portraits that can inflict damage on foes and provide buffs for allies.

The Pictomancer is a highly impactful profession, attracting many individuals who enjoy its flashy nature. If you want to become a Pictomancer in Dawntrail, here’s how you can achieve that goal.

What you need to unlock the Pictomancer job in Final Fantasy 14

To unlock the Pictomancer, you must meet two requirements. Firstly, you must have a copy of the Dawntrail expansion, which will have early access starting on June 28 and a general release on July 2. The Pictomancer will become available once Final Fantasy 14’s Patch 7.0 is live.

Additionally, it is essential that you possess a character at level 80 with either the Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job. Once you have completed the Endwalker expansion, you will be prepared to face the Pictomancer as soon as Dawntrail is released.

Accessing the Pictomancer Job in Final Fantasy 14

Once you have gained entry to Dawntrail, make your way to Old Gridania and head to coordinates X:8.0 Y:10.3. At this location, you will encounter an NPC known as the “Cheerless Hearer.”

Engage in conversation with this character and they will assign you a quest titled The Joy of Pictomancy. Fulfill this task to gain access to the Pictomancer profession.

The Mechanics of the Pictomancer in Final Fantasy 14

Keeping track of Palette Gauge and Canvases are two mechanics that the Pictomancer requires.

The Palette Gauge is a feature that Magical DPS players will find familiar, as it contains your bread and button attack spell rotation. As you use this rotation, the Palette Gauge will fill up and allow you to generate White Paint dots. These dots can then be used to cast the spell Holy in White. As you progress, you will also unlock the ability to create Black Paint and cast Comet in Black.

The Canvases are divided into Creature, Weapon, and Landscape categories. Each Canvas offers various options, for instance, the Weapon Canvas allows you to paint a hammer, enabling you to utilize abilities like Striking Muse and Hammer Stamp.

By combining specific canvas effects, you can execute powerful moves. For example, assembling Depiction of Pom and Depiction of Wings will enable you to cast Mog of the Ages. To perform Retribution of Madeen, you can later include Depiction of Claw and Depiction of Fans in your combination.

Despite the need to frequently plant your feet to successfully cast spells without interruption, you will also have the advantage of using Smudge, allowing you to glide across the room like in Splatoon, in order to dodge incoming attacks.
