There is a possibility that a rework for one of the most divisive game modes in Overwatch 2 may arrive sooner than anticipated.

Among the various game modes in Overwatch 2, the Clash mode has emerged as one of the least favored experiences. It features a PvP “tug-of-war” mechanic that requires players to capture a series of points while engaging in combat on a predominantly linear map.

The combat scenarios in Clash often resemble those in Overwatch’s controversial two-control-point (2CP) mode, characterized by close spawns near capture points and prolonged fights. The linearity of the Clash maps exacerbates the experience, offering limited strategic angles or flanking opportunities, thus rendering the engagements somewhat monotonous.

Fortunately, developers appear to be cognizant of the discontent surrounding Clash. About a month ago, an announcement was made regarding a rework of the game mode. Excitingly, it seems that these changes might occur quite soon.

Upcoming Changes to Clash

The Overwatch Champions Series, the premier esports tournament series for Overwatch 2, commenced its initial matches in Korea on January 24. Notably, the Clash game mode was conspicuously absent from the tournament’s map pool—an explicit removal suggesting its lack of competitiveness.

While Blizzard does not directly influence the Overwatch Champions Series, this decision aligns with a statement from Systems Designer Gavin Winter, who noted back in December that developers were implementing “another set of changes” for the Clash mode.

The community has interpreted this development as a potential sign that substantial changes to Clash are on the horizon. One Reddit user speculated that the mode’s removal from OWCS illustrates that developers are likely preparing significant updates and suggested that the OWCS team may be privy to future alterations from the Overwatch development team.

It is noteworthy that the Hanaoka map was previously included in the OWCS 2025 Open Qualifiers, indicating this decision to exclude Clash could have been a last-minute choice. Nevertheless, the exclusion of Clash from the competitive landscape is a positive indication that necessary changes for this contentious game mode are forthcoming.
