First Impressions of the Xbox ROG Ally at Gamescom

During my recent experience at Gamescom, I dedicated approximately 30 minutes to explore the Xbox ROG Ally. My first impression is that this handheld gaming device exudes a sense of premium quality.

Exceptional Build Quality and Display

The construction of the device instills confidence, and its 7-inch display offers a generous viewing area, all while delivering impressive clarity and smooth performance. While it is ergonomically designed for comfort, the ROG Ally is noticeably heftier than many competitors, weighing around 670 grams for the standard edition, and reaching up to 715 grams for the Ally X model. This heft can be felt during prolonged use.

Performance That Captivates

In gameplay tests featuring popular titles like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 and Forza Horizon 5, the ROG Ally performed exceptionally well. Both games displayed vibrant graphics, with Forza making a significant impression thanks to its expansive landscapes, which are typically better suited for larger screens. However, the handheld’s display more than compensated, allowing for an immersive experience akin to that of traditional consoles or PC gaming.

Innovative Features and Usability

A standout feature of the ROG Ally is its app switcher, which can be accessed by a long press of the Xbox button. This functionality allows users to switch applications seamlessly while continuing to play their game uninterrupted. For instance, I was able to switch apps while Tony Hawk maintained his momentum on the screen.

Caution with Configurations

One point of concern was the accidental activation of the back buttons, labeled M1 and M2. While these buttons can be remapped for customization, it’s advisable to avoid setting them to functions that may have significant consequences if accidentally triggered.

Conclusion: A Premium Gaming Experience

Overall, the Xbox ROG Ally impresses as a high-end device that excels in both functionality and aesthetics. However, its price will be a crucial determinant of its market reception. Considering its luxurious build and premium performance, I anticipate that the retail price will reflect its quality.

The Xbox ROG Ally and ROG Ally X are scheduled for release on October 16, 2025.
