Queen of Tears star’s villain role was so convincing he got hate DMs

Park Sung-hoon, the actor who portrays the antagonist Queen of Tears, is perfectly suited for the role, as seen through the hate messages he has received on various social media platforms.

Park is well-versed in portraying villainous characters in K-dramas. He rose to fame for his portrayal of Jae-joon in Netflix’s The Glory. Continuing in the same vein, his role as Eun-seong in Queen of Tears kept fans on a rollercoaster of emotions as they despised his character.

During his appearance on JoyNews24, he disclosed that his portrayal in the K-drama had caused many viewers to perceive him as a negative character. The overwhelming number of direct messages criticizing his role prompted him to temporarily step away from social media.

He shared, “The role received a lot of hate, which was enough to last me a lifetime. The influx of angry messages was so overwhelming that I couldn’t even check my DMs for a while. However, I must clarify that I am not like my character. I am grateful that the show was loved by many and that the Hae In x Hyun Woo couple received so much affection. It brings me immense joy to see the support.”

Upon the arrival of Eun-seong in Queen of Tears, Hae-in recognizes her as a former acquaintance from college. As Hae-in and Hyun-woo face difficulties in their marriage, Eun-seong seizes the opportunity to win her over.

Despite the increasing turmoil, what caused many to despise the character was his cunning scheme to seize control of Queens Group. It was exposed that he and his mother had long been plotting to destroy Hae-in’s family and strip them of their wealth. However, in regards to the K-drama, viewers were particularly disappointed with Eun-seong’s determination to sabotage Hae-in and Hyun-woo’s renewed love story.

Park has proven to be a skilled actor, particularly in his portrayal of antagonistic characters. In The Glory, he received widespread recognition for his portrayal of a despicable villain, whose evil deeds persisted until the very end. Contrary to his on-screen personas, Park is known to be a kind and genuine individual in real life. At a recent event, he even urged fans to separate their feelings towards his characters from their feelings towards him.

According to the actor in an interview with South China Morning Post, receiving direct messages on social media does not bother or hurt them. They view these messages as a result of viewers rooting for Hong and Baek, and their strong feelings towards the character. The actor enjoys reading these comments as it shows the audience’s love and interest in the series. They also believe that people’s perspectives have changed, with more individuals now separating the character from the actor’s real personality. This change allows the actor to view the comments as compliments for their convincing portrayal of the character.

Park will be joining the cast of Squid Game Season 2, and you can also stay updated on Netflix’s upcoming K-drama lineup for 2024.
