“Queen of Tears” Still Disappoint Viewers Despite Its Huge Success

Despite the happy ending portrayed in the final episode on April 28th, the journey of tvN’s hit drama “Queen of Tears”has come to an end. However, mixed reviews about the storyline have emerged, with many viewers praising the well-crafted plot in the first half of the drama (episodes 1-12) but criticizing the excessive developments in the latter half.

Park Ji-eun is a renowned writer known for creating numerous successful K-dramas. A distinguishing feature of Park Ji-eun’s works is her portrayal of strong and independent female characters rather than the traditional Cinderella-style female leads, and her latest drama “Queen of Tears”follows suit.

Despite some initial doubts about the male protagonist in the first 10 episodes of the drama, the well-crafted storyline and its emotional depth made it acceptable. The show’s exploration of the overused K-drama trope of an incurable disease, reminiscent of dramas from the 2000s, was presented in a fresh and captivating manner in “Queen of Tears.”

However, the plot took a bizarre turn in episode 13. The final 4 episodes of the drama were filled with typical K-drama tropes, such as memory loss, the second male lead being replaced, a reunion, and sacrificing for loved ones.

Drama fans had high expectations for the ending of this popular drama, hoping for a satisfying conclusion for the main couple. However, the writer chose to focus heavily on developing the villainous character of Eun-sung. Initially, Eun-sung was portrayed as a hardworking and talented individual who had achieved success through sheer determination. However, as the story unfolded, he became increasingly fixated on love and resorted to committing crimes. Despite Park Sung-hoon‘s impressive performance, Eun-sung’s character received widespread criticism for being unclear and morally ambiguous.

When it was announced that Kim Soo-hyun would be starring in “Queen of Tears”alongside writer Park Ji-eun for the third time, the public eagerly anticipated another drama masterpiece. In the initial episodes, the actor’s captivating performance evoked a range of emotions in viewers, leaving them laughing and crying along with him. His tearful scenes, in particular, gained widespread attention on social media and became a hot topic.

The writer continued to make Kim Soo-hyun cry excessively, leading to his tears losing their impact. The frequent scenes of crying and declarations of emotions eventually became repetitive and caused viewers to lose interest in the plot.

Ultimately, the exceptional performances of the cast and the charming chemistry between Kim Ji-won and Kim Soo-hyun were the driving forces behind viewers’ dedication to watching “Queen of Tears”until its conclusion.
