It has been a year since the Rachel Zegler drama, yet the backlash continues to be significant. This is evident in the teaser trailer for her live-action Snow White, which has received a staggering 1,200% more dislikes than likes.
If you happened to be on a social media hiatus last year, you may not be aware that Zegler faced undeserved criticism following the circulation of a 2022 interview clip. In the clip, the actor discussed the changes they will be making to the storyline in Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White, stating, “It’s no longer 1937.”
Afterwards, there was a deluge of harsh criticism, with people bringing up old conflicts and sharing out-of-context videos, and even threatening to boycott her films. In response, Zegler and her co-stars, along with numerous fans, have stood up to the trolls.
Despite the success of the live-action The Little Mermaid, it seems that the upcoming Snow White, in which Zegler plays the main character, is also facing negative reviews.
As of September 2, the Disney remake’s first teaser trailer has received 1.1 million thumbs down, a staggering 1,200% increase from its initial 84,000 likes when it was released last month.
The video features a clip from Zegler’s Snow White, showcasing the CGI dwarves and woodland creatures singing ‘Whistle While You Work’. Later on, we are introduced to Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen and Andrew Burnap’s portrayal of the prince (named Jonathan in this version).
Despite the efforts of Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb to combat review-bombing by removing fraudulent viewer feedback, teasers and trailers on YouTube remain vulnerable to this issue.
Despite the overwhelming amount of dislikes, there are also over 56,000 comments, with the majority of them being critical of the new movie. One comment read, “They have achieved the impossible – creating a movie that no one will even bother pirating.”
“One commenter noted that Disney’s decision to leave the comment section on in the trailer was a major achievement. Another person expressed gratitude to Disney for investing over $200 million in creating an entertaining comment section.”
One person remarked, “Disney essentially brought about world peace by releasing something that we all unanimously dislike.”
Some people have focused on the animated seven dwarves, with one person commenting, “It’s crazy to think they chose to use CGI for the dwarfs instead of hiring actual dwarf actors.”
Another person added, “Typically, actors with dwarfism are not given significant roles, but this was a great opportunity for seven of them to shine on screen instead of relying on CGI.”
The third person praised the decision.
Despite any potential backlash, Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White is set to release in theaters on March 21, 2025.
