In Bridgerton Season 3, Colin’s return from abroad has sparked controversy among fans due to his changed mannerisms in high society and his involvement in brothel scenes as a playboy.
During Colin’s solo journey after Season 1, he focused on traveling throughout Europe to distance himself from the drama of the ton. As Season 3 begins, he has returned as a handsome and desirable man, catching the attention of many women. However, he has also developed a new habit of visiting brothels.
In Episode 2, Colin and Penelope’s first meeting occurs after he agrees to assist her in finding a husband as a way of making amends for their argument in Season 2. Colin remains oblivious to Penelope’s affection for him, as well as her determination to move on from their relationship and find a suitable match.
Prior to meeting with her to discuss another lesson on finding a suitable partner, he makes a stop at a local brothel and indulges in the company of two women. He seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself until he realizes he is running late to see Penelope. This sudden change in behavior comes as a surprise to many of his fans.
“According to one fan on X/Twitter, Colin spent months traveling around Europe, enjoying himself and indulging in activities like sleeping with French women and journaling, all on his family’s dime. Upon returning home, he was known to frequent a brothel and engage in threesomes, even though he was expected to be begging for forgiveness at Penelope’s feet.”
One person stated, “The scenes in the brothel were the most terrifying. Colin as a brothel owner is unsettling, my apologies.”
Despite having his first kiss with Penelope and acknowledging his growing feelings for her, he still chooses to visit the brothel for a second time. This event once again received criticism from some fans, while others have countered that Colin cannot be labeled as a villain since he is not the only Bridgerton man to engage in such behavior.
One fan pointed out that while Anthony often visited brothels while trying to suppress his feelings for Kate in Season 2, it is unfair to villainize his character based on his visits. They argued that skipping the Colin brothel scenes does not justify using his visits as a means to discredit his character.
Despite criticism, some defended Colin’s decision to make a second visit, arguing that it served a larger purpose. They believed that he was not fully engaged in the first visit and chose to observe the women rather than actively participate.
The fan responded, “If you didn’t understand how the second scene in the brothels was meant to prove that he was not like his brothers and the other men, and was just trying to fit in by copying them, then you are extremely foolish. As he himself stated, he wasn’t even looking at those girls in the second scene.”
At the peak of his emotions towards Penelope, it became evident that he was only pretending to conform to societal norms. It was noted by some that the brothel scenes served as a realization for him that he was not truly the person he portrayed to the ton, and that his genuine feelings for Penelope were finally surfacing.
Bridgerton fans can mark their calendars for June 13, 2024, as this is the release date for Part 2 of Season 3 on Netflix. Along with the highly anticipated continuation of the series, viewers can also expect to learn more about Francesca’s sexuality, potential couples in Season 4, and new shows to binge-watch.
