Despite creator Beau DeMayo being fired before the series premiere aired, X-Men ’97 still managed to create buzz and anticipation before its release.
The conclusion was an unexpected, jolting event that took fans by surprise. DeMayo is a well-known writer with credentials on popular shows such as Netflix’s The Witcher and Paramount’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
DeMayo joined Marvel Studios in 2022 as a writer-producer, where he worked on various projects such as Disney+’s Moon Knight series and the highly anticipated X-Men ’97. Unfortunately, his time at the company came to an abrupt end on March 12 when he was terminated from his position, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. This news came as a shock to fans, especially since the animated revival was set to premiere in just two weeks.
DeMayo was reportedly in the process of writing new scripts for the upcoming Blade reboot in the MCU, as well as developing plans for the second and third seasons of X-Men ’97. What caused the change of events?
Why was Beau DeMayo let go from X-Men ’97?
At the time of writing, the reason for DeMayo’s abrupt termination from Marvel Studios remains unclear.
Despite not receiving any comments from DeMayo himself or Marvel Studios regarding his firing, DeMayo has remained active in promoting X-Men ’97. He has utilized his social media platforms to express gratitude to fans, share his thoughts on episodes, and hint at future developments.

According to Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Studios’ streaming, television, and animation, others who worked with DeMayo have also praised his work. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Winderbaum stated that DeMayo had a deep admiration and dedication for the characters, and his scripts were of excellent quality. He also noted that the rest of the team drew inspiration from DeMayo’s writing, resulting in the incredible show that is now on screen. Despite this, Winderbaum declined to share any specifics about DeMayo’s departure.
Despite the break-up being amicable, there is still speculation surrounding the sudden firing. Notable insider Jeff Sneider briefly addressed the matter on The Hot Mic podcast, suggesting that the individual’s difficult behavior may have played a role, and that their involvement with OnlyFans may have further exacerbated the situation.
According to Sneider, DeMayo was difficult to work with on a daily basis and there were concerns from Disney executives about the OnlyFans account he had created.
It is worth mentioning that DeMayo’s OnlyFans account is frequently referenced and there have been no allegations of abusive content on his profile. According to Sneider, DeMayo’s OnlyFans account is intended for non-sexual purposes, but executives were reportedly unhappy with him using the platform to promote his Disney work.
It is currently uncertain what the future holds for DeMayo and the X-Men. The initial season of X-Men ’97 will conclude this week, and there is speculation that a new showrunner will be sought after. The question of who will assume control of the X-Men and the extent to which DeMayo’s previous work will be incorporated into future seasons remains to be answered.
