The recent release of Apex Legends Season 21 saw the reintroduction of Solos mode, temporarily replacing Duos. Many players questioned Respawn’s decision, prompting a response from one of the developers.
One of the standout features of Apex Legends Season 21 is the introduction of Solo Takeover, marking the first time this mode has been available since its last appearance in Season 2 back in August 2019. This unexpected decision from Respawn is a significant shift, as they had previously dismissed any requests for a solo mode.
Despite Solos’ return, Duos has been replaced for the first half of Season 21. The community as a whole believes that adding Solos back was a wise choice, but not at the expense of Duos.
The topic of why Respawn chose to have only one game mode instead of all three at once was discussed in a Reddit thread, where multiple questions were raised. An Apex Legends developer responded to this discussion with an answer:
Community manager Amy Thiessen stated that while queue times may be a consideration, reintroducing this feature also provides an opportunity for monitoring and gathering data on this new variant and Solos in general.
The addition of a third game mode has resulted in longer wait times for players to find matches, as the player base is now divided. The recent introduction of Solos, after a significant amount of time, has naturally drawn in more players, possibly leaving Duos with fewer participants.
Having two modes simultaneously also allows developers to gather sufficient data and monitor players’ preferences, enabling them to make informed decisions. The team values and considers all feedback, which is shared among the entire team.
Despite the disappointment expressed by numerous players on social media, it seems that they will have to adapt to the six-week long period of Solos as some have stated that they prefer not to have a random third player in their game during Duos.
