Reasons Behind Bell Cranel’s Rejection of Syr in Danmachi Season 5 Explained

Reasons Behind Bell Cranel’s Rejection of Syr in Danmachi Season 5 Explained

In the latest season of Danmachi, particularly season 5, there was a pivotal scene where Bell Cranel turned down Syr after she expressed her love for him. Despite the internal turmoil this decision caused him, Bell chose to honor his true feelings, ultimately rejecting Syr, unaware that she was actually Freya.

New viewers of the series might be puzzled by Bell Cranel’s choice to decline Syr’s heartfelt confession. However, there is a significant reason behind his decision. From the very beginning of Fujino Omori’s story, it has been evident that Bell’s affections were directed towards Ais Wallenstein, the Sword Princess of the Loki Familia. Consequently, he struggled to let go of his feelings for her, thus making it impossible for him to accept Syr’s love.

Understanding Bell Cranel’s Rejection of Syr in Danmachi Season 5

Bell Cranel’s refusal of Syr’s romantic advances in Danmachi season 5 stems from his enduring affection for Ais Wallenstein. During a conversation in volume 17 of the light novel series, Ryu inquired about Bell’s reasons for turning down Syr, prompting Bell to reveal that his heart had always belonged to someone he deeply admired—none other than Ais Wallenstein.

The bond between Ais and Bell was established early in the series, notably when she rescued him from a minotaur attack in the dungeon. Bell was captivated by Ais’s grace, charisma, and serene presence, which ignited his infatuation for her. Yet, he never found the courage to act on his feelings.

Although Bell was aware that other characters in the series had feelings for him, his devotion to Ais was too profound for him to reciprocate those feelings. This became evident when Syr mustered the courage to confess her feelings to him in season 5.

Syr, who is indeed Freya in disguise, was drawn to Bell’s innocence and charm. From their first encounter, Freya harbored a desire to win Bell’s heart. She opted for a slow and careful approach, taking on the role of the tavern girl Syr. Freya even prepared lunchboxes for Bell and wished him good fortune during his dungeon expeditions.

Despite her affections, Syr postponed confessing her true feelings until the Goddess Festival in Danmachi season 5, wanting clarity on her emotions. Eventually convinced of her genuine feelings for Bell, Freya—still posing as Syr—sought his acceptance.

After learning where Syr was during season 5 episode 4, Bell made his way to her location, listening intently as she shared her heartfelt emotions. Aware of the significance of the moment, Bell reflected on Welf’s advice and chose not to leave Syr feeling abandoned. With great reluctance, he apologized before gently rejecting her offer in Danmachi season 5.

It’s important for fans to realize that while Bell Cranel declined Syr because of his feelings for Ais, he has not yet confessed his love to Ais in the light novel. Additionally, Ais has yet to reveal her feelings, although she has displayed signs of jealousy upon seeing Bell with Syr during the Goddess Festival.

Nonetheless, based on the trajectory that Fujino Omori has crafted in the light novel, it seems possible that Bell may ultimately end up with Ais. Conversely, Freya is unlikely to accept this rejection; her determination to make Bell Cranel hers will likely lead to future conflicts.
