Recommended Netflix Documentary on Video Games After Sonic the Hedgehog

If you’re seeking more video game thrills, whether you’ve recently rewatched the original Sonic the Hedgehog or are preparing for Sonic 3, Netflix’s High Score documentary is the perfect choice.

High Score, a six-episode docuseries focused on gaming, was initially launched in 2020 on Netflix. It was created by France Costel, who is currently the creative director at Apple.

The show, narrated by Charles Martinet, the longtime voice of Mario and Nintendo ambassador, centers on the beginnings of video games.

High Score provides an overview of the initial stages of gaming, following its evolution from the initial video games of the 1970s to the introduction of groundbreaking 3D and multiplayer games like Star Fox and Doom in the 1990s.

For die-hard fans of Sonic the Hedgehog, there is episode four, known as This is War.

The main theme of this episode centers around the well-known rivalry between Sega and Nintendo during the 1990s. It extensively explores Nintendo’s reaction to Sega’s unexpected triumph and includes insightful interviews with prominent individuals from the gaming industry during that era.

Despite only being given a six-episode run, High Score was still well received.

The Rotten Tomatoes critic score was 78%, slightly higher than the audience’s rating of 54% on the Popcornmeter.

Despite receiving criticism from both fans and critics, the series is largely noted for its broad and scattered focus on the gaming industry throughout its six episodes. As a result, many believe that the series fails to delve into the finer details of the industry’s history.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to release in theaters on December 21, 2024. Additionally, for those interested in streaming options, there are plenty of new TV shows coming to Netflix this month as well.
