Renewal Announcement: Season 2 for 2024’s Most Controversial Anime

One of the most debated anime series of the year is set to return, leaving viewers both puzzled and dissatisfied.

Netflix has confirmed the renewal of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for a second season. This news was announced on the official website, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect in the upcoming episodes with a brief summary.

Despite launching in October with minimal hype and expectations, even with the casting of Hayley Atwell, known for her role in the MCU as the iconic Lara Croft, the series made enough of an impact for Netflix to greenlight a second season just weeks after its debut.

However, some viewers are left scratching their heads. One comment on X/Twitter expresses disbelief: “Did anyone actually watch it?” Another remarked, “I didn’t think this show had an audience!”

Others were even more critical, stating, “This isn’t true anime and tarnishes the Tomb Raider legacy.” Another user added, “They can save it. It’s just a drain on bandwidth and storage space,” they tweeted.

The reaction stems from the fact that Powerhouse Animation Studios, located in the United States, produced this animated series, rather than a studio from Asia. For traditionalists, this distinction matters, as many believe that anime can only be crafted by teams from Japan, South Korea, or similar Asian nations, making this series merely influenced by anime, not a true representation.

In contrast, consider Terminator Zero, which Netflix commissioned from Production IG, a notable Japanese studio responsible for hits like Kaiju No 8. Because this team is based in Japan, their creation qualifies as authentic anime.

Regardless, more adventures await. The synopsis for Season 2 promises: “Join Lara as she embarks on an exhilarating global quest, uncovering the hidden mysteries of Orisha’s past, outsmarting a perilous billionaire intent on acquiring powerful masks for herself, all while unearths relics that harbor dark secrets and unimaginable power.”
