Red Dead Redemption has finally made its way to PC, almost 14 years after its initial launch on seventh-generation gaming consoles. Developed for PC by Double Eleven, this version offers a plethora of adjustable settings as well as compatibility with ultra-widescreen displays. However, there are some shortcomings in controller support. If you’re facing difficulties getting your DualSense or DualShock 4 to function properly in Red Dead Redemption, this guide will help you resolve those problems.
Resolving Controller Issues in Red Dead Redemption
On PC, Red Dead Redemption lacks built-in support for PlayStation controllers, meaning that only Xbox controllers work without adjustments. To enable functionality for PlayStation controllers, it’s essential to activate Steam Input.
Follow the steps below to enable it:
- Ensure Red Dead Redemption is closed
- Launch Steam and go to your library
- Right-click on Red Dead Redemption and choose Properties
- Select the Controller tab and enable Steam Input under Override for Red Dead Redemption
Once you enable Steam Input, your controllers should operate seamlessly in Red Dead Redemption. Please note that Xbox button prompts will persist, regardless of the controller you use, as the game does not provide an option to switch the prompt display settings.
Verifying Detected Controllers
If your controllers still remain unresponsive, check whether Steam recognizes them. To see which controllers are detected, go to Steam> Settings> Controller within the Steam client:
It would be great if the developers considered adding PlayStation button prompts for this version. Currently, the game is available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, making the lack of native support for PlayStation controllers puzzling.
Fortunately, the game provides cloud save functionality, but if you wish to safeguard your local game progress, navigate to the Red Dead Redemption save file directory on your PC.
